What You Need to Know About Shower Filters
Shower filters protect your health by removing chlorine and other harmful chemicals from your shower water. These chemicals are more toxic in your shower than in your tap water. Here's why:
- Chlorine and other toxins evaporate more quickly in your shower than water does. The steam in your shower contains higher levels of these toxins. When inhaled into the lungs, they are especially potent.
- The heat in your shower opens your pores. This allows your skin to absorb chlorine and other harmful chemicals in the water. This can cause skin damage and make existing skin problems worse.
What to Look For in a Shower Filter
A good shower head water filter can remove chlorine and other toxins. But all filters are not created equal.
To effectively filter your shower water, choose a filter that contains both KDF and a complementary filter media, such as carbon or Chlorgon.
Most water filters contain carbon filtration. However, carbon alone is not enough for a shower water filter. Carbon cannot handle the volume of water that passes through a shower water filter unless the filter is so big it can't be attached to your shower head.
KDF is crucial for effective shower filtration. KDF is a finely granulated alloy of copper and zinc. It is specially designed to remove or neutralize chlorine, heavy metal pollutants, and microbiological contaminants.
When choosing a shower water filter, pay careful attention to the size of the KDF cartridge. A good KDF shower filter will have a generous amount of KDF.
In addition, don't buy a filter that puts a carbon cartridge before a KDF-55 cartridge. Activated carbon takes oxygen out of the water, but the KDF needs oxygen to work properly. A good shower filter should pass the water through a KDF cartridge before a carbon cartridge.

Aquasana shower filters use a combination of KDF-55 and premium carbonized coconut shell filtration in their shower filters. The carbon filtration serves as a backup for the KDF-55, picking up any chlorine that gets past the KDF.
Sprite filters use KDF-55 and Chlorgon to filter shower water. Chlorgon was invented specifically for shower filtration by David Farley of Sprite Industries. It works at a wider range of water temperatures than KDF-55, giving you better protection from the effects of chlorine.
